This is a very small blog item. Still I want to share it with you all using the mac and vmware fusion. This morning I had a problem with my virtual machine. I could not ping a linux ubuntu image running mysql for some reason. I still did have internet connection from the vm, but no communication between the mac and the vm. I found this item:
http://fearandloath.us/vmware-fusion-bootcamp-partition.html
Here there was a small but very effective tip. It turns out that Mac OSX sometimes thinks that vmware’s virtual network is down. The following command tells it otherwise.
sudo /sbin/ifconfig vmnet8 up
Happy coding again
Mac OSX using vmware fusion : network is down
This is still helping people (though I wish it had been my first google result!)
Holy crap, thanks man! You just saved me from hell!
Thanks for the tip — and the precious, saved time!
Thank you so much for this post! It, combined with google probably just saved me several hours.
Thanks again!
Fenn.
Hi Jettro
Another thanks on this – I also had issues connecting to a local VM.
Strange bug, this, as traffic on the interface on the VM machine was showing sent and received packets, tcpdump on the VM worked fine, and so forth… but Mac OS thought the interface was down!
Oh well, at least it’s sorted out.
Oskar
I just wanted to say a quick thanks for posting this!
I was experiencing the same problem–tried rebooting and looking at network settings to no avail. Luckily, Google set me to this page, and now the problem solved. 🙂
